Saturday 20th June
11.30am - 5.30pm
A spectacular family day out to celebrate the ancient ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. This custom dates back to medieval times when a Norman Knight, on his way back to Cheshire from the Crusades, brought with him a sprig of the Glastonbury Thorn and planted it at Appleton Thorn. Children from the village school re-enact this planting and dance around the tree to celebrate whilst the whole village joins in the singing of the Bawming song.
The procession around the village will take place at around 12.00pm and the ceremony at the tree at 12.30pm. The fun continues at Bawm Fest, a Music Festival, from 1.00pm at Appleton Thorn Primary School.
